Reading to your baby, no matter how young he/she is, is a great way to develop the close and loving bond you have with each other. Your baby will love the undivided attention, and cuddling up will make him/her feel safe and secure, which is important for his/her social and emotional development.
But reading to your baby isn’t just great for bonding. The more words your baby hears in his/her first weeks, months and years, the better his/her language skills are likely to be later on. Research shows good language skills may also help him/her to do better at school.
Talking to your baby about what you’re both doing throughout the day is one fantastic way of helping to develop his/her language and understanding. Reading him/her stories and looking at books together builds on this, by introducing your baby to words that don’t naturally crop up in everyday life.
When should I start reading to my baby?
It’s never too early. Your baby learned to recognise your voice in the womb, and he’ll love listening to you talk, sing and read aloud from the moment he’s born. In fact, research suggests that the sooner you start reading to your baby, the more positive an impact it will have as he grows.
Of course, your newborn won’t understand the meaning of what you say to begin with, but the different rhythms and sounds will help to stimulate and develop his hearing as well as laying good foundations for listening skills later in life.
No matter how old your baby is, regular reading helps him understand that books are fun! What’s more, reading to your baby provides a little moment of quiet togetherness that you can both enjoy. Curling up together with a story is a wonderfully calming addition to your baby’s bedtime routine.
